indian superstar shah rukh khan questioned at new york airport because of his surname

August 16, 2009 2 comments

New Delhi: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has confirmed to CNN-IBN that he was detained at the Newark-New Jersey airport on Friday night when he was in transit to Chicago.

Shah Rukh Khan spoke exclusively with CNN-IBN and admitted he was shocked at the behaviour of the immigration officials.

The actor said he was told he had a “common name” and hence the questioning was required.

“It was in Newark where I was detained for questioning. It was because they said my name was common to some name that popped up on the computer. They were asking me silly questions like if I knew someone in the US who could vouch for me, if I could give them numbers of people they could get in touch with,” he said.

“I had all the documents; they were asking me where I was going to be staying. I gave the name of FOX people with whom I had finalised a deal a few days ago as contacts. I kept on giving numbers. They wanted to know why I came here,” he said.

Shah Rukh said the officers wanted to check his baggage but since it had not arrived, he was taken to a room where other people were also waiting for a second check on their visa.

He said he sent messages to his home, his secretary and also to Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, who informed the Indian embassy, whose officials came to his rescue.

“I was taken to a room where many people were awaiting a secondary check on visa, most were Asians. In fact many officers were reluctantly vouching for me, some people were asking for autographs and a Pakistani fan even said he knew who I was. But the officers said it was procedure and kept taking numbers from me. They told me you can’t use the phone in this area. I sent a message home and to my secretary and Rajiv Shukla. It took almost two hours. However, they did not take my fingerprints,” he said.

Asked if he felt angry, the actor said he felt bad “for the people in the room”.

“I did feel bad for a lot of people in that room, I know because I had an escort and someone would recognise me, I will get out. Others may face more trouble,” he said.

He also refered to ex President APJ Abdul Kalam‘s frisking episode.

“I have extra security because of my name. I can handle this but when you have someone as respectable as an ex-president getting frisked, I am nobody,” he said.

Shah Rukh also admitted that while he didn’t mind going to the US for work, it was always an inconvenient journey for him. “I am glad my family was not there, this has happened to me earlier. I am a shy, scared traveler and I really have to hold back my sense of humour. It certainly does well for people whose names are known, for others its trouble. My guard was also denied a visa apparently because he too had a common name”.

Through the chat with CNN-IBN, Shah Rukh never lost his sense of humour and kept coming up with his characteristic quirky ones. “I think my face scares people, I will try and change the way I look,” he said. He also said his son Aryan asked if he had “been caught”. ” I told him, not yet son”.

Incidentally, Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming releases include Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan which touches on the issue of racial profiling and discrimination faced by a certain minority community in a post-9/11 world.

The Fox-STAR Studios will finance and distribute the film, reportedly spending Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion/$20 million) in the process.

Shah Rukh starrer Dulha Mil Gaya to release on 18th September

It’s confirmed. Dulha Mil Gaya would be releasing all over on 18th September. This would give the film a four day extended weekend since the festival of Eid falls on Monday, 21st September. Producer Viveck Vaswani is certainly heaving a sigh of relief as for the first time ever; he goes on record with the exact date of release.

“I had always maintained that it is producer’s prerogative to announce the date of his film’s release.

Over last so many months, there were so many out there announcing the film’s arrival on my behalf. It was annoying initially but later it just started amusing me.

There were so many different dates floating around even when I had never gone on record to talk about the exact date”, says Viveck who is still not resting after the completion of a hectic final schedule of Dulha Mil Gaya.

He goes on to add, “So now let me state on record that 18th September is the day when my film arrives. I can assure that it’s going to be one BIG festival movie. Dulha Mil Gaya is about celebration and the release timelines for the movie should further aid that.”

Directed by first timer Muddassar Aziz, the film was 95% complete till a few months back and was held up for completion since Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t shoot for a ‘qawalli’ sequence. Battling a shoulder injury, Shah Rukh finally managed to complete the film’s shoot by working non-stop for three days earlier this week.

“Correction – it wasn’t three days but three days and three nights. Even though he was in acute pain throughout and I suggested that we reschedule the shoot, he said that ‘let’s finish the shoot; it’s already too late’. What more can one say about the commitment of a man like this”, says Viveck with admiration in his tone.

With the shooting of the ‘qawalli’ track, Dulha Mil Gaya is now 100% ready w.r.t. principal shooting.

Smiles Viveck, “In any case we had already begun work on post production in parallel so there hasn’t been waste of time, resource or energy.

The film’s dubbing too is 50% complete. Sushmita should be having her dub soon though for Fardeen, I will hold on for a while till he starts feeling a little more composed after his father’s demise. As for Shah Rukh, he is dubbing for the movie next week.

So yes, I can claim that the team of Dulha Mil Gaya is up there with the progress of the film.”

Shah Rukh to make Bollywood’s costliest movie

Mumbai, Feb 15 (IANS) Indian screen superstar Shah Rukh Khan is spending an estimated Rs.1 billion for perhaps the costliest Bollywood movie to be made so far. The movie for children will be in the VFX medium, using computer-generated special effects.

It will be a movie featuring a lot of children who wish for bad things, but get a shocking reality check when they come true, Shah Rukh told Patrick Frater of Hollywood’s top trade magazine Variety in a recent interview in Berlin.

He is talking to Eros Multimedia and Charles Darby (of “The Matrix” and “Minority Report” fame), the visual effects guru, who recently co-ventured with Eros to launch Mumbai-based special effects Eyeqube Studios.

Shah Rukh said he was planning the movie under his home banner, Red Chillies Productions. The new venture – to be directed by Anubhav Sinha – had a budget of $25 million (almost Rs.1 billion), making it the most expensive Bollywood movie to date.

“We are dedicating the next eight or nine months to taking the best technicians from around the world and asking them to help us make the best VFX film India has ever made. It will be madcap, over the top. I want it to be as beautiful as ‘Spider-Man’ in terms of effects,” Khan told Variety.

The VFX medium uses computer-generated effects that give movies a fantasy-like feel. The best example of a VFX movie is Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park”, where computers made the dragons fly.

Asked why he has not yet been courted by Hollywood, he replied in his characteristic tongue-in-cheek manner: “”I’m waiting for someone like Steven Spielberg or James Cameroon (of “Titanic” fame) or some other great person like Ang Lee to make a film, a film about a brown, thin, scrawny Indian guy who doesn’t speak English too well. If they ever have a character like that and Google it, I’m sure they’ll find me.”

He said he’d love to do an action-comic movie like Chris Rock and Jackie Chan.

“As a producer I would like to make an Indian film that genuinely crosses borders, not a crossover film, where you forget that it has a language, like ‘Life Is Beautiful’. I didn’t realise at first that it was an Italian film. Or ‘The Lives of Others’. I think I can do it in my lifetime, maybe in the next five years.”

Shah Rukh admitted to the interviewer that his last year’s home production, “Om Shanti Om,” was full of clichés of Indian cinema. “But it is full of heart. I think we need to make more movies like this and gradually more and more people will come to like that,” he said.

Shahrukh abandoning his Knights!

07-shahrukh-khan-110908Shahrukh Khan is called King Khan not without any reason. He makes his presence felt wherever he goes. The cricket stadiums in South Africa looked more lively a few days ago than it is now. The reason is, Shahrukh is back in India and is not cheering for his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. Will he return to South Africa? Very unlikely.

Well, the ever-energetic Shahrukh returned home mainly for two reasons – to vote for the Lok Sabha and get relief from the pain of watching his team go down time and again. Before leaving South Africa, he promised his team that he would not return if they didn’t win a match in his absence. Unfortunately, his team continued to lose and he is busy with his own work.

Now that his team is almost out of the contest for the semi finals berth in this year’s IPL, he has got himself busy shooting for his much-hyped film My Name Is Khan by Karan Johar. He said that his team has not lost motivation in spite of the string of loses. He said that some of the matches almost broke their hearts while they failed to perform on the others. He added that he had told his boys to go out and have fun.

In spite of doing very badly in the IPL season 2, the fact remains that Kolkata Knight Riders has the biggest brand value at $42.1 million. However, Shahrukh is worried in spite of the money flow, as he knew that his team should perform well to live up to it.

At the moment, he is not in the mood to decide the future course of the team. He just wants to stay away from them to take the pressure off their shoulders!

Shahrukh’s Happy New Year to take off this year

May 14, 2009 Leave a comment

Director Farah Khan is miffed with the reports that her next ambitious film Happy New Year starring Shahrukh Khan has been postponed to next year. The fact is that she is determined to start the film this year.

Farah said that she would start Happy New Year this year, come what may. She added that she is working on the script and is very sure that she would begin the film this year even if it’s December 31st. She is finding hard to understand how people spread such baseless rumours.

Happy New Year has been in the news since it was announced for the simple reason that Farah’s films with Shahrukh, Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om did very well at the box office. It will be her hat trick hit with Shahrukh if it does well.
