Star Trek’ scored the top box office spot, taking in $76.5 million in its opening weekend, a total that includes $8.2 million in IMAX showings. Trekkies demonstrated that they backed J.J. Abrams’s take on the 11th film in the popular sci-fi series, which uses a younger cast to portray the classic characters.

That’s precisely what J.J. Abrams and Paramount did with ‘Star Trek.

‘”last week’s top film, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” came in at No. 2 with $27 million. The prequel to the “X-Men” franchise has made nearly $129.6 million in two weeks. “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” came in third with $10.45 million, “Obsessed” was fourth with $6.6 million, “17 Again” was fifth with $4.4 million and “Next Day Air,” came in at sixth place with $4 million.
